A single drop of water cannot be defined as truly dirty or truly clean, yet we can call an entire ocean dirty on the basis of a few drops.
Well, I got the impression that it was largely your own idea to mix realism with surrealism in this particular way. Because of that, I just thought it would be worth you exploring it a bit more, seeing as it has a pretty strong effect. If it's in fact a formula that you're following though, then it doesn't matter. This stuff is I think the artwork with the most initial impact that you've done, though I don't think it's the most technically skilled (Baby's blanket is amazing in its realism).
Really good news to hear about these slither paintings you're doing. And no, I hadn't read the description before, so I didn't know about this. Yeh, by the sounds of it these new paintings are the ones you should work on. I wasn't aware just from skimming through your gallery that these were ones that meant a lot to you and the psychedelic ones weren't, and from that vantage point I had to assume they were all equally significant.
So yeh, if in the psychedelic paintings you're following a past formula, whereas in these slither paintings you're really putting yourself into your art, then absolutely you should keep working on the slither ones. I hope you don't forget to keep uploading them! The way you describe your work reminds me a lot of the art one of my friends does.
On a side note, have you been influenced by Lucian Freud at all?
No I have not really been influenced by freud at all. I, at this point in my artistic life, am more for learning everything that I can about the technical aspects of painting and abandoning being influanced by other painters. Right now with the Slither series I'm more influenced by musicians like Prince and Seal, than I am by painters. I'm glad that you would ask me that though because he is a great painter, but I don't think that his style is as big of a deal as a lot of people like to think. He just mixes a ton of differnt colors and values and puts them in the geometrically correct places and does minimal blending. The effect is awesome of course, but anyone could learn to paint like that. Plus, I can't really say that I'm too impressed with straight up figureitive work with minimal additional subject matter. The human body is to easy to seduce veiwers with on it's own, no matter how much you "express yourself" with brush strokes. The same goes for seville. I don't know, why do you ask?
